When these symptoms seriously interfere with a person’s life, a stress disorder is diagnosed. If the symptoms disappear in less than a month, the condition is called acute stress disorder (ASD).4 If the symptoms last for more than one month, PTSD is diagnosed.5 Symptoms of PTSD usually begin to appear within three months of the trauma. Occasionally, they develop years later.

ONSET OF PTSD

Degree of exposure to a traumatic event is one risk factor for PTSD. The severity of the trauma is another. The fact that a trauma is caused by human beings—instead of being a natural occurrence, like a tidal wave—is still another. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, when commercial airplanes were flown into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the group of people most at risk for developing PTSD were those most directly involved. These included the rescue workers and people who ran for their lives from the burning buildings and falling debris. Hundreds of neighborhood children also witnessed people leaping to their deaths from the upper stories of the trade center. Thousands more people also lost loved ones or witnessed the horror firsthand.
